Open Doors, Open Battles - Spiritual Warfare Law #2
A 7-Minute Read
What I’m going to Teach You Today
In this edition of The Equipper, we’ll explore one of the most overlooked yet crucial aspects of spiritual warfare—The Law of the Open Door. This law is simple but powerful: anything you allow in your life, either by action, omission, or agreement, can become an entry point for the enemy. Once the enemy gains access, he can operate in your life, bringing confusion, bondage, and spiritual stagnation. We’ll delve into how doors are opened, the signs that they are open, and most importantly, how to close them.

Why It Matters
The Law of the Open Door is one of the most important principles for any believer engaged in spiritual warfare. Why? Because if you leave a door open, the enemy will use it. Open doors—whether from past sins, occult practices, or unresolved emotional wounds—give the devil legal rights to enter your life. This is why so many believers find themselves in repetitive cycles of sin, fear, and oppression. To live in victory, you must understand how these doors are opened and shut them. Ignoring this law means losing battles that you were meant to win.
Why Do Most People Fail?
Most Christians fail in spiritual warfare because they either don’t recognize the open doors in their lives or don’t take the necessary steps to close them. Many believe that merely praying harder or reading more Scripture will remove the enemy’s access. But the Bible is clear: we must act by repenting, renouncing, and removing any foothold the enemy has. Without addressing these open doors, you are vulnerable to repeated spiritual attacks, and the enemy continues to have legal rights to torment you.
The Law of the Open Door: Repent, Renounce, Remove
Repenting and Closing Personal Open Doors
Ignoring open doors leaves you vulnerable to spiritual attacks.
In Ephesians 4:27 (NIV), Paul instructs us, "Do not give the devil a foothold." A foothold is a place of access—any area where you’ve given the enemy legal rights to influence your life. These open doors can be tied to personal involvement in sinful activities, agreements you’ve made knowingly or unknowingly, or even generational influences that haven’t been addressed.
Personal open doors aren’t just about big, obvious sins. They can be subtle. For example, engaging in occult activities, holding onto unforgiveness, or continually participating in harmful behaviors are all ways that doors get left open. Every time you leave a door open, the enemy gains a foothold, and that foothold turns into bondage over time.
Evidence of an Open Door
The signs are often right in front of you—open doors have clear, destructive consequences.
Open doors manifest in various ways, and you can often see the evidence of these doors through the fruit in your life. Jesus taught that you would know a tree by its fruit (Matthew 7:17 NIV). If your life is producing confusion, fear, or sinful behaviors, you may be dealing with an open door.
Nightmares and Night Terrors
One of the most common signs of an open door is persistent nightmares or night terrors. These aren’t just random dreams but often involve spiritual attacks. Proverbs 3:24 (NIV) reminds us, "When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet." If your sleep is filled with terror, it could be a sign that a door has been left open to demonic influence.
Sexual Dreams and Immorality
Another strong indicator of an open door is recurring sexual dreams, immoral fantasies, or soul bonds. These dreams are often rooted in past sexual sins, pornography, or soul ties with former sexual partners. Sexual immorality gives the enemy legal rights, and the consequences of not closing those doors can be devastating. As 1 Corinthians 6:18 (NIV) warns, "Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body."
Confused or Oppressive Thoughts
Confusion and oppressive thoughts are signs that the enemy may have legal access to your mind. If you constantly struggle with double-mindedness, despair, or a lack of clarity, this could indicate an open door. God is not the author of confusion but of peace (1 Corinthians 14:33 NIV). An open door gives the enemy space to twist your thoughts and keep you in a cycle of doubt and fear.
Hatred and Unforgiveness
Unforgiveness is a major open door that many Christians overlook. Jesus made it clear in Matthew 6:14-15 (NIV), "For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins." When you refuse to forgive, you open the door for bitterness, resentment, and even demonic oppression.
Works of the Flesh
Galatians 5:19-21 (NIV) warns about the works of the flesh: "sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like." These are often the fruits of open doors that haven’t been dealt with. When these sins are active in your life, they indicate an area where the enemy has gained access.
The Fruit of Open Doors: What Happens When You Don’t Close Them?
What you tolerate will dominate.
Leaving doors open allows the enemy to establish strongholds in your life. These strongholds manifest in several ways:
Recurring Sin and Addiction
Open doors lead to cycles of sin that seem impossible to break. Whether it’s addiction to pornography, drugs, or even lying, these cycles are spiritual chains. Romans 6:16 (NIV) warns, "Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey?" As long as the door remains open, the enemy has legal rights to keep you in bondage.
Chronic Fear and Anxiety
Fear is one of the primary weapons the enemy uses to keep you bound. Whether it’s fear of failure, fear of people, or fear of death, these are rooted in spiritual strongholds. 2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV) says, "For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline." Chronic fear points to an open door.
Demonization
When doors are left open, demonization is often the result. This isn’t possession but a deep influence over your thoughts, emotions, and actions. Mark 5:8 (NIV) demonstrates the authority Jesus has over demons: "For Jesus had said to him, 'Come out of this man, you impure spirit!'" If you’re experiencing oppressive thoughts or emotional torment, the enemy may have legal access through an open door. You can read more about the different types of demons, such as trauma level, sin level, and occult level demons, here.
Physical Sickness
While not all sickness is tied to spiritual causes, there are instances where open doors lead to physical ailments. James 5:15-16 (NIV) instructs us to confess our sins and pray for healing. Spiritual doors can manifest physically, and sometimes healing requires repentance and the closing of doors.
Freedom from Fear: Closing the Door
Fear is not your portion—peace is.
Fear is one of the clearest indicators of an open door. Whether it’s fear of death, fear of failure, or fear of never being good enough, these are signs that the enemy has gained access to your life. Romans 8:15 (NIV) reminds us, "The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again." Fear is not from God, and closing the door to fear requires addressing the root cause and removing the enemy’s foothold.
The Power of Unforgiveness
Unforgiveness is a spiritual door that grants the enemy legal access.
Unforgiveness is like leaving your front door wide open for the enemy to walk in. When you hold onto grudges or bitterness, you’re giving the enemy free reign to torment you. As Jesus said in Matthew 6:15 (NIV), "But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins." Forgiveness isn’t just about releasing the other person—it’s about closing the door to the enemy’s schemes.
Final Thoughts: Time to Shut Every Door
Don’t let any door stay open. What you don’t close, the enemy will walk through.
The Law of the Open Door is straightforward but often neglected. You can have all the knowledge in the world, but if you leave doors open to the enemy, you’ll never experience the fullness of your freedom in Christ.
This is your moment to act. Repent, renounce, and remove any foothold the enemy has in your life. Don’t just skim through these teachings—act on them. Your freedom is at stake, and with the power of Christ, you have everything you need to shut every door the enemy has tried to open.
