MISSIONAL WARFARE - The Top Five Things You Need To Know

Read Time 7 Minutes

Welcome to a Special Cambodia Edition of The Equipper!

In this edition, we’ll dive into what I call "Missional Warfare." If you’ve ever wondered how prayer, spiritual warfare, and assignments from God intersect on the mission field, you’re in for a powerful read. Whether you're preparing for a mission trip or simply want to expand your understanding of spiritual dynamics in foreign lands, these insights will equip you for battle.

As you read, keep in mind that I’ve just returned from a prayer assignment in Cambodia. It was an eye-opening journey where we saw firsthand the spiritual forces at play, and I’m excited to share some of these lessons with you.

Psalm 24:1-2 (NIV)

“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters.”

“We prayed from the killing fields to human sacrificial sites.”

WHAT IS MISSIONAL WARFARE?

Missional warfare is the battle we engage in when advancing God's kingdom in regions that have been historically entrenched in idolatry, false worship, and demonic oppression.

On this recent assignment to Cambodia, we saw firsthand the importance of addressing spiritual strongholds. It’s essential to understand that wherever the Gospel goes, spiritual resistance rises. This warfare is not just a side effect of missions—it’s part of the mission.

I'll break down these key principles, sharing scriptural foundations, insights from the mission field, and practical steps you can take to become more effective in your spiritual warfare efforts.

Why Does This Matter to You?

You might be thinking, “I’m not going to Cambodia, so how does this apply to me?” Well, missional warfare isn’t just for overseas mission trips—it’s for your neighborhood, your workplace, and even your family. The enemy holds territory until God's people take action.

In Ephesians 3:9-11 (NKJV), Paul writes about the "manifold wisdom of God" being made known to the principalities and powers through the church. We’re not just passive observers; we are active participants in revealing God's plan to the world and taking back territory that has been held by the enemy.

A Must Listen To Message For Christians Concerning Angkor Wat.

Ephesians 3:9-11 (NKJV)

“...the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ; to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places, according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

This matters because every believer has a role in advancing the Kingdom. When we engage in prayer and spiritual warfare, we are helping to establish God's rule in areas that have long been in bondage. This isn’t just about casting out demons—it’s about reclaiming land, hearts, and minds for the Kingdom of God.

Why Many People Fail

Here’s the hard truth: most people fail in spiritual warfare because they treat it like a side project. They either underestimate the power of the enemy or overestimate their own strength. Without a clear understanding of what they are up against and who is with them, they stumble.

Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 10:3-6 (NKJV) that the weapons of our warfare are not carnal. If we approach these battles with natural means—relying on human wisdom, logic, or willpower—we will fall short. Victory comes when we operate in God’s power, use spiritual weapons, and walk in obedience.

2 Corinthians 10:3-6 (NKJV)

“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.”

The reason many fail is that they don’t recognize the spiritual nature of the battle. It’s not just about human effort; it’s about aligning with God’s strategy, wielding the authority He’s given, and praying with insight.

Top 5 Things You Need to Know About Missional Warfare

Let’s get into the five critical components of missional warfare that every believer needs to understand:

1. God Initiates the Assignment

Missional warfare is not something we take lightly or do on a whim. It is initiated by God, and He will reveal both the where and the how through revelation and research.

For example, when I went to Cambodia, we spent time praying and preparing before the trip. God gave us specific insight into where the enemy had a stronghold, and we knew exactly how to pray.

2. A Team with Leadership

Spiritual warfare is not a solo sport. You need a team, and you need leadership. Ideally, your team should include at least one representative from the local people group. Why? Because they have a unique authority over the land and its spiritual history.

This principle was evident in our Cambodia assignment, where we partnered with local believers who had a deep understanding of the spiritual atmosphere in their nation.

3. Identificational Repentance

Nehemiah 1:5-7 (NIV) offers a perfect model for this. Identificational repentance is the act of confessing not just personal sins but the sins of a group, community, or nation. Why is this important? Because it breaks the legal rights the enemy has to hold territory.

Nehemiah 1:5-7 (NIV)

“Then I said: ‘Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s family, have committed against you. We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees, and laws you gave your servant Moses.’”

When we prayed in Cambodia, we stood in the gap for the sins of the people, asking for God’s mercy and His rule to be established. This act of humility removes the enemy’s legal foothold in the land.

4. Decrees and Prophetic Acts

Missional warfare often involves decrees and prophetic acts. These are Holy Spirit-led actions that break demonic rule and declare God’s authority.

In Cambodia, we felt led to declare specific decrees over certain regions where demonic activity was concentrated. We stood on the promises of God and the authority of Jesus Christ to tear down strongholds.

5. On-Site Prayer and Insight

One of the most critical aspects of missional warfare is praying onsite with insight. You must be physically present in the land you are praying for. There’s a unique spiritual authority that comes with being on the ground and releasing God’s word into the atmosphere.

2 Corinthians 4:3-4 (NKJV)

“But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.”

In Cambodia, we visited several ancient religious sites and places where sacrifices had been made. It was vital to be physically present and break the spiritual blindness over the people. We prayed on-site, releasing God's light into the darkness.

What You Can Do Next

Now that you understand these five principles, I encourage you to begin asking God where He is sending you. It may be across the world, or it may be across the street. Missional warfare is not about geography but about obedience to God’s call.

Here’s a challenge for you: Ask God for insight into your region or city. Begin to pray on-site, in the places where the enemy has a foothold. Use the principles you’ve learned today—team up with others, ask for God’s revelation, repent for the sins of the land, and boldly declare God’s rule over your territory.
