HOW DO I KNOW I AM UNDER A SPIRITUAL ATTACK?

In my experience, I have seen several different types of attacks that seem to come out of the blue. Here are the top five specific attacks you might experience:

Sudden and Unexplained Feelings of Fear or Anxiety

The enemy often tries to instill fear or anxiety, creating feelings of dread, panic, or unease without any clear cause. These can creep in without warning, leaving you unsettled and distressed. When these emotions strike out of nowhere and seem to overwhelm you, it may be more than just a natural response to stress—it could be a sign of a spiritual attack.

2 Timothy 1:7, NKJV

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

  1. Overwhelming Confusion and Mental Fog

When you suddenly experience confusion, lack of focus, or mental fog, it could be a spiritual attack meant to keep you from walking in clarity and God’s purpose. When your mind suddenly feels clouded and you struggle to think clearly, it can be frustrating and debilitating. This confusion can hinder your ability to make decisions, focus on God’s truth, and walk in your calling—often indicating a spiritual assault.

    1 Corinthians 14:33, NKJV

For God is not the author of confusion but of peace.

  2. Unexplained Physical Ailments or Sickness

The enemy may try to oppress you with physical ailments or persistent sickness, especially when there’s no medical explanation, to hinder your work for God. Physical health is crucial for fulfilling God’s plans, but sometimes sickness or ailments appear with no clear cause or medical explanation. When you face persistent health issues that resist treatment, it might not just be a physical battle but a spiritual one as well.

    James 5:14, NIV

Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.

  3. Sudden and Intense Temptations

If you find yourself facing sudden and powerful temptations, particularly in areas where you've had victory before, it may be a spiritual attack designed to lead you into sin. Temptation is part of every believer's life, but there are times when it comes on suddenly and with overwhelming force. These intense moments of temptation, especially when they target your areas of past victory, could be the enemy's attempt to draw you away from God.

    1 Corinthians 10:13, NIV

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.

  4. Persistent Negative Thoughts and Accusations

The mind is a battleground, and the enemy often targets it with a barrage of negative thoughts and accusations. When these thoughts become persistent, making you doubt your worth or God’s love, it’s a clear sign of spiritual warfare. The enemy, known as the accuser, may bombard you with thoughts of guilt, worthlessness, or failure, aiming to erode your confidence in God’s love and your identity in Christ.

    Revelation 12:10, NIV

For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down.

HOW CAN I PROTECT MYSELF AND MY FAMILY FROM SPIRITUAL ATTACKS?

  1. Pray in Faith for God's Protection

Faith in God is your first line of defense, but prayer helps you recognize spiritual attacks. By consistently communing with God through prayer, you create a spiritual hedge around yourself and your family. Regularly pray for God’s covering, for the armor of God to be upon you, and for His angels to guard your home. This daily act of seeking God’s presence brings His divine presence and reveals the works of the enemy.

    2 Thessalonians 3:3, NIV

But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.

  2. Use the Word of God as a Weapon

The Word of God is the primary and most powerful weapon against the enemy’s schemes. Declare scriptures over your life and your family, especially when facing challenges or attacks. Declaring God’s promises and truth out loud not only strengthens your faith but also repels the enemy, who cannot stand against the authority of God’s Word. Paul told Timothy to fight well with the prophecies spoken over his life. So we should do likewise to walk in victory. War with His words!

    1 Timothy 1:18 NASB

Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you fight the good fight

    Ephesians 6:17, NIV

Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

  3. Stay Vigilant and Sober-Minded

Vigilance is key in protecting yourself and your family from spiritual attacks. Being spiritually alert allows you to recognize when the enemy is attempting to infiltrate your life. This involves staying close to God through fellowship with Him, His Word, and worship, keeping your mind and spirit attuned to the Holy Spirit. We must learn to walk sensitive to His wisdom, continually.

    1 Peter 5:8, NIV

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

  4. Cultivate a Lifestyle of Worship and Praise

Worship and praise are powerful tools that invite God’s presence and drive away the enemy. Cultivating a home environment filled with worship music, gratitude, and praise can create a spiritual atmosphere that drives away demonic influence. Regularly engaging in worship not only strengthens your connection with God but also builds a fortress of peace and joy that the enemy flees from.

    Psalm 22:3, NKJV

But You are holy, O You who inhabit the praises of Israel.

  5. Put on the Full Armor of God

The Armor of God is essential for protection in spiritual warfare. By daily putting on the armor—truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God—you equip yourself and your family to stand strong against the enemy’s attacks. Each piece of armor provides specific protection, making you resilient in the face of spiritual battles.

    Ephesians 6:11, NIV

Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.

WHAT ARE THE WEAPONS OF WARFARE?

While there are many weapons of spiritual warfare we could discuss, I want to highlight some that are less commonly talked about but are incredibly powerful:

Matthew 16:18

And I say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades (death) will not overpower it [by preventing the resurrection of the Christ]. 19 I will give you the keys (authority) of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind [forbid, declare to be improper and unlawful] on earth will have [already] been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose [permit, declare lawful] on earth will have [already] been loosed in heaven.”

  1. Declarations: Speaking God’s Word and promises over your life and circumstances as a way to affirm truth and resist the enemy.

  2. Authority of Christ in Us: Recognizing and exercising the authority given to us through Christ to command the enemy to flee.

  3. Taking a Stand: Actively standing against the enemy’s attacks by shifting your mindset from defense to offense, asserting your victory in Christ.

  4. Controlling the Spiritual Climate: Actively maintaining a godly atmosphere around you by refusing to compromise, thereby limiting the enemy’s influence.

  5. Living from His Presence: Continually communing with God, allowing His presence to guide and protect you in every situation.

These weapons may be less discussed, but they are vital for effectively engaging in spiritual warfare.

As we wrap up today's edition of The Equipper, I want to leave you with this: Spiritual warfare is not something to be taken lightly, but it’s also not something to fear. Armed with the knowledge and tools God has provided, you can face any attack with confidence. Remember, you are not alone in this battle—Christ has already secured your victory. As you apply what you've learned today, you'll find that the enemy's tactics lose their power over you.

Continue to stand firm in your faith, pray without ceasing, and wield the Word of God boldly. Your ability to recognize and respond to spiritual attacks will grow, and with it, your walk with Christ will deepen. Until next time, stay vigilant, stay empowered, and most importantly, stay connected to the One who equips you for victory.

Blessings,

Mike Brewer
