WHAT IS A CURSE?
DEFINITION
A curse is a powerful, often unseen force that brings harm, misfortune, or spiritual demonization into someone’s life. A curse can be brought about by a spiritual decree that brings about cycles of hardship, sickness, financial struggle, or relational turmoil. These curses can originate from the consequence of sin, from others through harmful words or actions, or even from demonic forces seeking to hold us captive.
Breaking these curses is not just about resisting the enemy but about stepping into the full authority and freedom we have in Christ, dismantling every stronghold that stands against us.
THE DEMON DECLARED “INCEST”
I was leading a person through deliverance, and as I commanded the demon to reveal its name, it responded with, “Lust.” I firmly asked, “Lust, why are you here?” The demon answered, “The curse.” I pressed further, commanding in Jesus' name, “What curse?” It responded, “Incest from his father.”
Another time, I was leading someone through deliverance when the spirit of Aphrodite manifested. I commanded it to reveal its purpose, and it responded with, "Sex." I demanded, “What about sex allowed you to enter?” It revealed that it was connected to temple sex from many generations prior. This temple sex referred to ritualistic acts that were willingly performed in ancient times.
This encounter underscores the deep roots that generational curses can have, sometimes tracing back to ancient practices. These curses, linked to the sins of our ancestors, can still open doors to demonic oppression today. Addressing them with the authority of Christ is essential to bringing lasting freedom.
FURTHER INSIGHTS INTO CURSES
Dr. Randy Clark, in his Ministry Team Manual, gives a framework so we may understand five types of curses:
General or Specific Curses
Randy explains that a curse may be invoked to bring specific unfortunate conditions or issues into a person’s life or the life of their bloodline family. These curses can be very specific, designed to bring about destruction without causing death, or they may be sent to bring about death, sickness, or disease.
I have encountered curses that targeted only the firstborn female child in each family. Others I’ve seen claim all the children for a specific demon god. Still, there are some curses that only activate when a child reaches a certain age.
Intentional Conditional or Unconditional Curses
Conditional curses are designed to activate only when specific conditions are met. Often, these are occult-related curses, triggered when a person fails to fulfill a vowed obligation. For example, a curse may be released or activated if someone breaks a vow, especially in cases related to organizations like Freemasonry or the Masonic Lodge.
In my experience, I’ve traced many bloodlines where the cycle of destruction began when a family broke their allegiance with the Lodge but failed to break the associated curses. This highlights the importance of not only renouncing ties but also actively breaking any curses that may still be at work.
Randy Clark gives a few examples of conditional curses from scripture. Let’s take a look at one of them from the passage of Deuteronomy.
Deuteronomy 28:15 But if you refuse to listen to the Lord your God and do not obey all the commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come and overwhelm you:…
Unconditional curses occur when a witch or demonically inspired person sends a curse of death or destruction upon an individual. These often happen when a church or person begins to experience a breakthrough in a territory that has been under the influence of the occult.
I recall arriving at our church one evening and finding a gutted bird at the threshold of the building. As I removed it, I smiled and declared, "I break all curses that have been sent against me, our leaders, and this family, in the name of Jesus."
Unintentional Curses
These are curses that are activated without the intent or awareness of the individuals involved. They can be triggered by intense, traumatic events, such as a murder or sexual assault. While the offender may not be consciously invoking a demon or intending to curse the victim, their actions align with demonic forces, potentially releasing a curse against the person or even their family bloodline. This is how unintentional curses are started.
Self-Imposed Curses
While most curses result from the actions of others, it is very possible to activate a curse upon ourselves. This generally happens when our internal beliefs align with demonic influences, and we speak carelessly. When our words agree with the enemy, a curse can be enacted. Jesus warned us against speaking carelessly, and this is why I often refer to these as spoken word curses.
Matthew 12:34b-37 For the mouth speaks from that which fills the heart. 35 The good person brings out of his good treasure good things; and the evil person brings out of his evil treasure evil things. 36 But I tell you that for every careless word that people speak, they will give an account of it on the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
Generational Curses
A curse is not broken until it is actively broken! This is crucial to understand when setting people free. To be clear, I’m not referring to the curse of sin for the Christ follower—that curse is broken the moment we are born again through Jesus. I’m speaking of curses that arise when our ancestors, knowingly or unknowingly, came into agreement with demons, initiating a generational curse. These are the types of curses we are focused on breaking.
We’ll explore generational curses further in the future, but for now, I recommend reading my book, The Self-Deliverance Guide, available at MikeBrewer.life. It contains extensive curse-breaking renunciations to help you or those you lead find freedom.
HOW TO BREAK A CURSE
A curse can only be broken in and through Jesus. The power and authority to break every curse are found in Jesus' atonement, where He established the New Covenant.
Curses are broken by grace through faith in Jesus, but we must actively exercise the authority of Christ and declare these truths.
To break curses effectively, it's essential to gather as much information as possible about the curse. Understanding its origin, nature, and details will help us confront and dismantle it with the authority given to us in Christ.
Here are some things we desire to know:
Who? Who created the curse? Was it a bloodline relative, an ancestor, or someone else? Perhaps a witch or a coven? Understanding the origin is crucial.
What? What is the nature of the curse? Is it a curse of destruction, death, illness, poverty, or sexual perversion? Identifying the specific type helps in breaking it.
How? How was the curse created? Was it through a ritual, an act of violence, or some other means? Knowing the method provides insight into how it operates.
When? Is it a generational curse, or was it created by someone still living? Did it originate inside the family or outside the bloodline? How many generations ago did it begin?
Where? If we know the general geographical location, it may reveal much about the curse’s root nature. For example, if it’s rooted in Africa, there’s a strong chance it’s related to tribal gods.
Why? Why was the curse created? Was it intended as punishment, or was it meant to bring a supposed blessing or gift? Understanding the motive behind the curse can help dismantle it.
The question often arises of how we get this information.
We ask questions. (Natural Insight)
We observe situations through the family tree. (Natural Insight)
We pray and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal things. (Supernatural Revelation - and this can be subjective information)
We interrogate the demons when they manifest. Obviously, demons will seek to lie, but we hold them to the truth under the judgment of God. (Supernatural Revelation - and this can be subjective information)
TAKING ACTION
Now that you have gathered the information, it is time to pray and renounce.
Pray to God and repent of all known sins and rebellion.
Pray to God and repent of ALL occult practices you have been involved in and all that you know your family bloodline has been involved in.
Choose to forgive everyone, as you cannot hold onto unforgiveness and be delivered from demons and curses.
RENOUNCE and DECLARE TO DEMONS that you break and cut off all contracts, blood covenants, ceremonies, and rituals, including those involving the blood and lives of animals and humans in Jesus’ name. You renounce all agreements that you or your ancestors have made that were in accord with demons. Declare that you renounce and reject all penalties involved in these broken contracts. Declare these things broken from your life and your bloodline.
From the information you have gained, renounce and declare it as specific as possible. As a guide, use The Self-Deliverance Guide, which is linked above.
CONCLUSION
In this journey of breaking curses, knowledge is power, but action is essential. Understanding the roots, nature, and specifics of a curse is vital, but it is through Jesus alone that we find the power and authority to break them. As we've explored today, curses can have deep, generational roots, often tied to the actions and agreements of our ancestors. But remember, a curse remains until it is actively broken.
Take the time to gather information, seek revelation, and use the authority of Christ to dismantle every stronghold in your life and the lives of those you lead. Whether you're battling a personal curse or helping others find freedom, know that victory is already secured in Jesus.
